Pathologist concluded the death of Asia, the 12-year-old tiger at Niabi Zoo, was caused by an irregular heartbeat.

Asia lived at the zoo for nearly her entire life, and was found dead in her exhibit Thursday, March 29, 2012.

Zoo staffers described Asia as “beloved” with a “strongly charismatic personality”.

A necropsy was performed by a veterinarian at Niabi Zoo and then further examination was conducted at the University of Illinois’ College of Veterinary Medicine.

The official cause of Asia’s death was acute cardiac arrhythmia, more commonly known as irregular heartbeat.

“We’re sad to have lost Asia,” said Interim Zoo Director Marc Heinzman, “but the entire zoo staff welcomes the feeling of closure that comes with learning why she is gone.”
