SOUTH SIOUX CITY – Iowa Governor Terry Branstad spoke at a beef plant tour in Nebraska Thursday. Four different governors spoke out on why “pink slime” is a safe addition to beef.
Unfortunately for beef manufacturers though, more people are hearing bad things about “pink slime.”
“I was horrified when I read about it,” McDonald’s worker Julie Meyer said. “We only buy the best top quality beef.”
“Pink Slime” is technically called “lean finely textured beef.” The product is thinned leftovers of beef that is treated with ammonia.
“Absolutely not,” Meyer said when asked if she buys the meat. “It’s disgusting.”
In February, McDonald’s stopped using the product.
“It’s 100 percent beef at least,” Meyer said about the McDonald’s beef. “So, anything other than that, I’m not okay with.”
But Rock Island Public Health Inspector Terri Davies has seen this issue before.
“In terms of making you harmful, or sick,” Davies said. “I can tell you, it would not do that.”
That’s the same message officials in Nebraska we’re trying to send out. Even with officials like Branstad standing behind the slime, some residents are still worried. On March 22nd, Hy-Vee announced it would stop selling beef with “pink slime.” Wednesday though, it said it would start selling the beef again. However, it would be sold separately from the other kinds of meat.
