Police say an intoxicated Rock Falls woman crashed her car into four mailboxes and then abandoned the vehicle at the crash scene.

Officers were sent to the 1200 block of Franklin Street in Rock Falls just after 7 a.m. Tuesday, March 20, 2012 after Penny Schmidt, 23, allegedly struck four mailboxes with a vehicle.   The person who called police reported the driver had left the vehicle and walked away from the scene.

Police said they found Schmidt shortly after they arrived at the crash.  She was arrested after a brief foot pursuit.

Schmidt was arrested for driving under the influence of an intoxicating compound.  Police also charged Schmidt with possession of a controlled substance (ecstasy), leaving the scene of an accident, obstructing justice, driving while her license was suspended and no insurance.

Police said Schmidt also had outstanding warrants in Whiteside County for unlawful use of a building and failure to appear for no insurance.  Schmidt also had an outstanding warrant in Ogle County for possession of cannabis.

Schmidt was held in the Whiteside County Jail.
