Smoke and rubble sit where a house and two barns stood after an early morning fire in Plainview, Iowa.
The fire started around 12:45am on Tuesday, March 13th on 255th Street, just east of 60th Avenue, and about five miles north of Walcott.
No one was in the house at the time of the fire. It's owned by dairy farmers who live across the street and has been in their family since the 1800s.
"In 15 minutes, it just spread unbelievably fast," says Roger Holdorf as he describes what he saw when his son woke him up early Tuesday morning.
Roger says he watched helplessly from his family's house on the other side of the road while his childhood home went up in flames and then spread to two of his business' barns.
The barns held machinery and equipment, something the fourth generation farmer says is as necessary to his business as it is expensive.
"We're going to be using that [equipment] here in a couple of weeks, so now I have a whole different thought process of what to get ready and what to get going," says Roger. "It's a setback. We'll come back from it and work our way out of it like we normally do."
Roger says he's hoping insurance will cover most of what was destroyed.
Investigators are still trying to figure out what caused the fire, but the Mayfield Fire Chief says he believes it was old wiring.
