All three Rock Island Public Library branches are closed today, Wednesday, February 29, 2012, in observance of a furlough day.
This is the sixth and final furlough day planned for the current fiscal year, which ends March 30, 2012. The furlough days are part of $3 million in city-wide budget cuts.
Library staff will be on unpaid leave and most library services will be unavailable.
The main library, 30/31 Branch and Southwest Branch locations will close at 8 p.m. Tuesday, February 28, 2012 and reopen at 9 a.m. Thursday, March 1. Book drops will be locked after 8 p.m. Tuesday. Patrons can use the online catalog and place items on hold, and eBooks and downloadable audio books will continue to be available.

City leaders say the FY2012-2013 budget is looking much better than this year’s. They don’t expect there to be any tax increases, personnel cuts, or big cuts in services. Some street work may be postponed and residents can expect a small 3% increase in water fees starting January 2013. The increase will cost the average taxpayer about 94 cents more every month.
The city is holding a public study session on the upcoming budget Saturday, March 3rd at 8am in city hall. An official public hearing is set for March 12th.
