Harrisburg native calls storm damage heartbreaking

Amy Bennett woke up to an alarming text at 6 a.m. Wednesday.

“The text message I woke up to was, ‘Harrisburg was flattened by a tornado. We can’t contact the boys.'”

The boys are Bennett’s two youngest brothers, who live in Harrisburg, Illinois. So do her aunts and uncles. Her daughter’s dad works in Harrisburg.

With phone service virtually non-existent, it was wait-and-see for hours.

“I haven’t spoken to my brothers yet, but Facebook. That’s how we know they’re okay,” Bennett said. “I wish I could hug them and tell them I love them. I just want to hear their voices.”

She grew up in Harrisburg and moved to Kewanee 11 years ago, but still calls Harrisburg home. She knows some of the victims of the twister, too.

“One of the elderly ladies who did not make it, we used to attend church with her and her family,” Bennett said. “It just breaks your heart. It’s just unreal.”
