After announcing in January the elimination of 1,000 positions globally, Archer Daniels Midland officials confirm more than 40 positions will be eliminated at the polymer facility in Clinton, Iowa.

The cuts, resulting from an end of ADM’s relationship with Metabolix, could be followed by more.   Long-term decisions depend on whether the company finds an alternative use for the Clinton polymer production facility.

Affected employees will receive a severance and be offered the chance to apply for other positions with ADM.

The statement was issued by Kevin Moore, vice president and general manager of Specialty Feed Ingredients for ADM:

“Today, ADM informed 43 colleagues at the Clinton PHA plant that their positions have been eliminated as a result of the end of our commercial alliance with Metabolix. Another 46 colleagues will remain at the plant as we work on preparing the facility for an idle period. Although we are exploring options, we have not yet made long-term decisions about staffing levels or alternative uses for the polymer production facility. It’s a world-class facility capable of producing a variety of products.

“As we stated in January, this decision is not a reflection of our ADM employees in Clinton nor the high-quality work they have done.

“Affected employees will be offered severance packages in addition to 60 days’ pay in accordance with the federal WARN Act. They will also receive outplacement services and are invited to apply for positions at other ADM facilities.

“The polymer plant is just one part of ADM’s large corn processing complex in Clinton.  ADM has approximately 1,000 employees in Clinton. The company’s Clinton operations include a corn wet mill, a cogeneration power plant, a grain elevator and barge loading operations. Products ADM makes in Clinton include corn sweeteners and starches, beverage alcohol, corn oil, enzymes, ethanol, animal feed products and Fibersol, a dietary fiber product that can be used in foods and beverages. We will continue to have a major presence in Clinton, and to support the area accordingly.”
