Area college boots 12 players and forfeits basketball season

Southeastern Community College men’s basketball forfeited the rest of the season after ten players were kicked off the team and two more were deemed academically ineligible.

Ten players were dismissed December 29, 2011 according to a statement on the school’s website.   They will also lose their scholarships.

The dismissals happened due to “violations of college and athletic department policy concerning student conduct,” said the SCC statement.

The ten dismissed players are:  Marshaun Maull, Jordan Aaron, Nicos Norris, Davon Morton, Deonte Houston, Fahro Alihodzic, D’Lando Carter, Mike Hemsley, Elhadji “Bira” Seck, and Ron Patten Jr..

Keenan and Keanu McGhee will also not return for the spring semester because of academic ineligibility.

That takes the basketball team’s roster down to two eligible athletes.

“Tion Barnes and Taquan Zimmerman, are currently enrolled and set to return when the semester begins on January 11,” said the SCC statement.

The team had a dozen games remaining on its regular-season schedule.

SCC Vice President of Student Services Joan Williams expressed her disappointment.

“When our athletes sign on to play for SCC, they agree to abide by a high standard of behavioral expectations. The recent acts of these young men fell short of that standard,” said SCC Vice President of Student Services Joan Williams.  “This kind of conduct by our students-especially our athletes-will not be tolerated.”

Details concerning the nature of the conduct were not released.

Current season ticket holders may request a prorated refund for the remaining eight home games.

The SCC Blackhawks were the 2010 Region and District XI basketball champions.
